1st Annual Swinebert & Dempsey’s “Hog ‘n Claw Bowl”

Hog and Claw Bowl 2014 (FINAL)

Swinebert: We’re late, but whatever, welcome to the 1st Annual Swinebert & Dempsey “Hog ‘n Claw Bowl” Where we share our favorite ads aired during (Or in some cases prior to) Super Bowl 2014.

GEICO (Maxwell at the DMV)
Swinebert: We pigs need more respect. I sure know how Jabberjaw feels at times…

Dempsey: I can relate. I get so tired of cats seen as anti-social, pompous, megalomaniacs who only see the worst in humans, rarely the best!

Cheerios (Or Why we still have faith in humanity at large)

Swinebert: Just sweet.

Dempsey: Quite right, S.B. Though I wonder the “Bargain” Langley (My Big brother) got prior to my birth…

Chobani (Mr. Bear Goes WILD…)
Swinebert: This describes my Dad when he had to be on a highly restrictive diet, yogurt (In general) saved his sanity. He can now eat as likes, but this ursine tantrum brought me back to those days, which is FAR funnier in hindsight as it was serious back then.

Dempsey: Had similar “Dad” issues myself, S.B. But they had nothing to do with diet. We’re good now. But things were wicked intense for ages!

Swinebert: Well that’s it from us. What were your favorite Super Bowl Ads? (Please keep comments “Safe For Work” even if the videos in question weren’t)

Dempsey: Special Thanks to Talking Animal Addicts for letting us guest blog here today. Our site’s still in the works. But you can follow S.B. and me on Twitter (@Swinebert_and_D)

  • I wasn’t that impressed with the commercials this year. I think the Esurance commercial after the Super Bowl was genius though.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Kelly, and I agree this year wasn’t as epic as years past.

Still, I (Like Swinebert and Dempsey above) found some I liked.

  • Ha ha, your post made me laugh! Like Kelly, the few ads I saw didn’t impress me this year. However, I didn’t really watch much of the super bowl. I did watch the halftime and really enjoyed it for once! Love Bruno Mars!

    • I’m not much into sports. But I tend to catch highlights on the news, and I like seeing my home teams do well, sadly Detroit sports teams are so erratic these days, or they start strong and falter nearing playoffs/championships, even if they don’t win it all, I just want them to do well.

I know lots of people who banish television because they loathe the commercials, Super Bowl or not, but some ,

When I started taking my writing seriously, I saw commercials differently, and let’s face it, as kids especially there’s always that ONE commercial (Super Bowl Driven or not) that you just love, even if you’re not materialistic or (as many writers, myself included) not a natural marketer, as much as we strive to be our own best advocates for our writing and ourselves as writers, not all of us could work at Nike or other marketing department of major companies, that doesn’t mean we can’t and just as importantly don’t want to work for our success!

I admit I’m a sucker for the Charmin bear ads (We don’t always buy Charmin) and the Geico ads can be funny (though some can outright WEIRD!) the ones involving animals are particularly my favorite, of course.

I know lots of people (ESPECIALLY writers) who banish television because they loathe the commercials, Super Bowl or not, but some can be outright touching, while some are definitely annoying, either the approach taken or because you often feel it’s the ONLY you see (I was glad when the ads for a movie I loathed finally ended)

We don’t always want the thing advertised, we just liked how the ad engaged, rather than annoy, it’s why some Geico or Progressive ads go viral even if you don’t plan on using their services.

When I work on anything involving engaging potential agents/editors/readers, I try to think of the ads that grab me and try to tailor what the people I’m pitching to respond to positively versus the things we want to avoid! (i.e. NOT pitching YA romance to a publisher or agent who only handles picture books and middle grade fiction and nonfiction)
